Visiting Palestine: JABALIA Refugee Camp in 2012
I shot this film in Jabalia Refugee Camp (Arabic: مخيّم جباليا) in Northern Gaza in December, 2012. My guide was Majed Abusalama, who grew up in the Camp and introduced me to his neighbors and friends there.
Jabalia was established by the UN in 1948 to provide shelter to Palestinians who had been driven from their homes during the Nakba. With more than 100,000 inhabitants, Jabalia became the largest refugee camp in the Palestinian territory. Its residents have been at the forefront of the struggle for freedom and justice in Palestine.
Now (in October 2024) Jabalia Camp and its people are under severe attack by Israel, which receives large amounts of financial and military support paid for by US and German taxpayers.
